From Excel to a holistic carbon footprint - how The Family Butchers meet rising customer requirements with reliable CCF and PCF data

Case study - The Family Butchers, from Excel to a holistic carbon footprint

About The Family Butchers

The Family Butchers is a leading German food manufacturer of meat and sausage products, supplying grocery retailers as well as other industry partners. Sustainability is a strategically relevant topic for The Family Butchers, not only due to external requirements, but as an expression of the company’s own responsibility and long term corporate orientation.

Initial situation

Before working with Tanso, The Family Butchers faced growing requirements:

  • new regulations such as CSRD, EUDR and stricter reporting obligations
  • increasing customer requirements, especially from key accounts passing regulatory demands down the supply chain
  • sustainability ratings via platforms such as EcoVadis

Data collection was previously handled mainly in Excel. This led to common challenges, including incorrect or incomplete data, assumptions that were difficult to trace, and a lack of a consistent methodology.

What initially appeared to be an additional compliance task has evolved into a central strategic lever that opens up new opportunities for innovation and sustainable growth.

Why Tanso

After reviewing the market, The Family Butchers chose Tanso. The decisive factors were primarily:

  • an all in one solution for CCF, PCF and CSRD
  • a modular structure that allows data to be captured once and reused across all modules
  • a clear and intuitive software solution that enables independent day to day work

The close and personal support, as well as the wide range of exchange formats such as topic specific webinars and events, were also particularly convincing. The collaboration with Tanso is characterized by a strong partnership, openness, a solution oriented approach and a clear focus on the company’s actual needs.

„With Excel, you eventually reach your limits. If you manufacture products, you need software that structures and processes data cleanly. It is hard to imagine a more efficient approach than Tanso’s modular setup.“

Results

Since using Tanso, The Family Butchers have already achieved significant progress:

  • in the first year, the Corporate Carbon Footprint was fully set up in Tanso
  • all relevant Scope 3 categories could be taken into account, something that was not possible with Excel
  • data quality and traceability improved noticeably

At the same time, work on Product Carbon Footprints began. Within a short period, 45 base products were already created. This enables the company to reliably respond to increasing customer requests, especially from grocery retailers. In the food industry in particular, PCFs have become business critical, as major retailers increasingly demand detailed product emission data.

In addition, emissions can be differentiated between FLAG and non FLAG relevant goods. This level of transparency simplifies future reporting requirements and enables a more precise assessment of emission sources along the value chain.

„Through our collaboration with Tanso, we were able to fully calculate our CCF within just over six months and at the same time directly provide our first PCFs.“

CSRD reporting is also being addressed in a structured way using the Tanso software. The goal is to systematically capture all available data by the end of 2025 and to complete the first CSRD compliant sustainability report by early 2026, including validation by the auditor. The CSRD report will also serve as the basis for the EcoVadis rating, the improvement of which is an important driver for the company.

Another key result is the creation of in house analytics dashboards. Evaluations of fleet emissions, waste and Scope 3 emissions provide transparency on hotspots for the first time and significantly improve internal communication. Specialist departments can work in a data driven way and communicate results more clearly across the organization.

Despite a high level of independence in using the software, the support provided by the Tanso team is highlighted as a central success factor. Regular check ins, up to date webinars, content from the Tanso Academy and exchange with other companies through the Tanso community and events such as the Tanso Sustainability Summit help companies expand their networks and continuously develop their sustainability capabilities.

Outlook

For the coming years, The Family Butchers plan to systematically expand their sustainability management. The focus is on full CSRD compliance, efficient data collection processes across all departments, the expansion of PCFs for sales and customer communication, and the definition and prioritization of concrete emission reduction measures.

Recommendation

Adopt a professional solution as early as possible in order to build robust data structures, processes and expertise, as regulatory requirements and expectations within the supply chain continue to increase.
