PCF in practice: how the chemistry and metallurgy specialist Treibacher creates value through product level transparency

Case study on PCF calculation at Treibacher

About Treibacher

Founded in 1898, Treibacher Industrie AG stands for technological progress in the chemical and metallurgical industry. With around 900 employees at its headquarters in Althofen, Austria, Treibacher develops and produces high performance materials, specialty chemicals and recycling solutions for customers in more than 30 countries.

Initial situation

Before working with Tanso, Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) were calculated externally. This resulted in high costs, low transparency and only limited coverage of the broad product portfolio.

Treibacher aimed to perform the calculations internally in the long term, with transparent data, efficiency and a solid foundation for strategic sustainability decisions.

Challenge

The diversity of products made PCF calculation particularly complex:

  • several business units,
  • numerous intermediate steps,
  • different production methods,
  • and chemical processes with their own emission factors.

In addition, customer expectations regarding PCF transparency were rising and internal experience with standards and emission factors was limited.

Why Tanso

Treibacher chose Tanso to calculate PCFs independently, transparently and in compliance with standards. This combination convinced the team:

  • intuitive software,
  • broad emissions database,
  • close methodological guidance

With Tanso, Treibacher was able to digitally map complex processes, store its own emission factors and significantly improve data quality and audit readiness.

"After a very short time, we were able to provide the first 20 PCFs in standardized reports and use them directly for customer inquiries."

Results

With Tanso, processes were mapped, data was harmonized and an ISO 14067 compliant methodology was established.

Today, Treibacher has:

  • a central and transparent data foundation,
  • PCFs that can be added quickly and in line with standards,
  • structured, audit ready and customer friendly reports,
  • data driven identification of CO₂ hotspots and decision making processes
"Today I can calculate in five minutes how much CO₂ we would save if we electrified a furnace, this flexibility would have been impossible before."

After a short time, the first 20 PCFs were completed and could be used directly for customer inquiries in standardized one page reports. At the same time, Treibacher began creating its own emission factors.

The project also strengthened sustainability awareness throughout the entire company.

Outlook

With Tanso, Treibacher has created the foundation to systematically manage sustainability through PCFs. In the future, the platform will be used to analyze the impact of energy sources, recycling shares and process changes in real time.

Treibacher also plans to run its Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) calculation through Tanso, creating transparency across all levels.
