Frequently asked questions
Can I start with incomplete data?
Yes. Tanso supports a stepwise maturity model: you start with spend-based calculations (Exiobase, CEDA) and recognized secondary factors, then gradually improve data quality with quantity-based factors and primary data from the supplier portal, without having to rebuild the system.
What is the difference between market-based and location-based Scope 2 emissions?
Market-based emissions reflect the specific electricity mix defined in contractual agreements, for example through the purchase of green electricity. Location-based emissions reflect the average electricity mix of a geographic area, regardless of contracts. The CSRD requires both perspectives to be disclosed, and Tanso calculates and reports them in parallel.
Which emission factor databases does Tanso use?
Tanso integrates 14 recognized databases, including Ecoinvent, Idemat, IPCC, GLEC, Ökobaudat, UBA Germany and Austria, as well as Exiobase and CEDA for spend-based calculations. From more than 100,000 available factors, we display 30,000+ curated, ready-to-use factors. We have also developed more than 1,000 proprietary emission factors for activities that standard databases do not cover. For many industry-specific factors, benchmarking against industry values is available.
Which Scope 3 categories does Tanso cover?
All 15 categories of the GHG Protocol. We offer particular depth in Scope 3.1 (purchased goods and services), 3.4 (upstream transportation), 3.10 (processing of sold products) and 3.11 (use of sold products). Industry-specific emission factors are available for every category.
How does Tanso fit into our existing IT landscape (SAP, ERP, data lake)?
Tanso is ERP and data lake compatible. You get started with structured CSV imports, and API integrations with SAP or other systems can follow later. No ERP overhaul required.
How long does it take to create the first CCF?
Usually less than 8 weeks until your first complete CCF. From the second cycle onward, customers benefit from up to 80% recurring time savings, because mappings, emission factors and responsibilities remain stored.
How does Tanso support calculations according to the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064?
Tanso calculates corporate carbon footprints according to the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064, including all 15 Scope 3 categories. The methodology is TÜV Rheinland certified. An integrated audit trail with dedicated auditor access makes every line item traceable.
