Corporate sustainability reporting refers to the disclosure of environmental, social, and governance performance. It is often required by law and aims to enable stakeholders to assess a company's non-financial performance.

A sustainability report, often referred to as an ESG report, is a comprehensive document created by companies, organizations, or institutions to present their performance and strategies in the field of sustainable development. The main goals are the transparent disclosure of the ecological, social, and economic impacts of the company, as well as communication with various stakeholders. The report typically encompasses three central areas: economy, ecology, and social issues, while also addressing aspects of governance. Important are the core key performance indicators (KPIs) included, which document progress and measures to improve sustainability.In recent years, the legal basis for sustainability reporting has been strengthened, particularly through the introduction of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which sets expanded reporting obligations for large companies and publicly listed small and medium-sized enterprises in the EU. This directive requires comprehensive disclosure of social, ecological, and governance topics as well as the application of mandatory European reporting standards (ESRS) and audit by external third parties.

The preparation of a sustainability report often takes into account international standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) or the German Sustainability Code. Additionally, the report serves as a strategic tool for the sustainable management of companies, to inform investors and customers, and to enhance corporate reputation. Given the growing relevance of sustainable practices in corporate governance, the sustainability report is increasingly becoming a central component of a comprehensive corporate strategy aimed at securing future competitiveness and success.
