Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an international organization that provides the world's most commonly used standard for sustainability reporting. The GRI was founded in 1997 with the aim of creating a mechanism for accountability for responsible environmental behavior by companies. In 2016, the GRI published its first global standards for sustainability reporting, which enable companies and other organizations to report on their impact on environmental, social, and government matters.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an independent, international, non-profit organization that provides the world's most widely used framework for sustainability reporting. GRI was established in 1997 to create a standardized approach to non-financial reporting and to promote transparency regarding the economic, environmental, and social impacts of organizations. The first guidelines were published in 1999, and since then GRI has developed into a leading authority in the field of sustainability standards.

The main goal of GRI is to provide organizations with a common language to communicate their impact on critical societal issues such as climate change, human rights, and corruption. This contributes to improved accountability, enhanced stakeholder trust, and supports sustainable development on a global scale. The GRI Standards are modular in structure and are continuously updated by the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB). They consist of universal standards, industry-specific standards, and topic-specific standards, enabling organizations to create comprehensive reports that focus on aspects relevant to them. Over 10,000 organizations worldwide already utilize these standards, including many of the largest companies. GRI reporting not only promotes comparability and transparency but also improves risk management processes and communication with various stakeholders.

Through regular review and updating of the standards, GRI remains a dynamic player in the field of sustainability reporting, with the latest revisions taking effect in 2023. GRI enables organizations to actively contribute to sustainable development while providing stakeholders with relevant information necessary for responsible decision-making.
