The high volume of goods acquired poses a major challenge in Scope 3
In 2018, the automotive manufacturer started to prepare a group-wide carbon accountung using Excel. In addition to Scope 1 & 2, some categories in Scope 3 were already taken into account. However, the recording of further categories proved to be challenging and labor-intensive due to the extensive data volume of several tens of thousands of tons of purchased goods.

motherson was interested in a solution that would make it easier to identify and efficiently process the relevant data within the company, as well as simplify laborious steps through automated and digital processes. This is where the Tanso software came into play, which can directly process over 100,000 lines with its import assistant. In the process, the assignments of the corresponding emission factors are saved so that only minimal manual effort is required the next time data is imported.
Within five weeks, several tens of thousands of tons of purchasing volume were recorded and reduction potential identified
The software designed for high data volumes and the pragmatic approach of the Tanso team made it possible to successfully analyze the entire pur-chasing volume - and thus several tens of thousands of tons - within five weeks. This analysis at product level laid the foundation for identifying focus areas for detailed data collection using primary data. It also identified initial potential for reducing carbon emissions that could be realized through the use of secondary materials.
