Carbon neutral
Carbon neutral describes when direct and indirect CO₂ emissions from a company, product, or activity are completely balanced through emission reductions and compensation initiatives.
This is typically achieved through:
- Emission reductions via efficiency improvements and process optimization
- Purchase of carbon credits and offset certificates
- Investments in renewable energy or reforestation projects
The term is applied across industries — from manufacturing and transportation to energy and hospitality — and demonstrates a genuine climate commitment without requiring the immediate elimination of all emissions.
Important distinction: Carbon neutral focuses specifically on carbon dioxide, while comprehensive sustainability approaches address all greenhouse gases (GHGs). It also differs from "net zero," which typically implies a more comprehensive and permanent reduction pathway.
