Geolocation Obligations and Documentation (EUDR)

Geolocation obligations ensure the traceability of raw materials in trade.

The geolocation obligations and documentation, established in the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), are fundamental components in ensuring the traceability of raw materials in the trade of deforestation-free products. These regulations provide clear guidelines for companies wishing to import into or sell goods in the EU regarding the documentation of the origin of their products. A central goal of the EUDR is to combat illegal deforestation and protect biodiversity by allowing only those products that do not originate from deforested areas after December 31, 2020.

Companies are required to capture the precise geographical coordinates of their production areas and to provide a due diligence declaration before bringing their products to market. This declaration must contain detailed geolocation data, which can be captured through various methods such as GPS technology or satellite images. The responsibility for compliance with these requirements lies with the companies, regardless of whether the information is provided by suppliers.

Compliance with the geolocation obligations poses a challenge particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Often, there is a lack of formal land titles and digital infrastructure in emerging countries to accurately capture geodata. Nevertheless, precise capture and documentation of this information is crucial to ensure sustainable delivery and access to the EU market. Technological solutions to support these compliance processes are increasing and offer companies the opportunity to optimize their processes and create transparency in the supply chain.
