Digital Product Passport

The Digital Product Passport is a digital document for product information about the lifecycle.

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) represents an innovative, digital document that provides comprehensive and standardized information about a product and its entire lifecycle. This information ranges from production through use to disposal or recycling. The DPP is a central tool of the European Sustainability Strategy and will be made mandatory for many product groups within the EU starting in 2027. The goal is to promote transparency, traceability, and sustainability in the circular economy.

The DPP enables digital accessibility to detailed information regarding the origin, composition, production conditions as well as use, repair options, and disposal of a product. A comprehensive documentation of all relevant product data ensures traceability throughout the entire supply chain. Furthermore, the DPP supports the reuse, repair, and recycling of products by providing all necessary information for resource-efficient circular handling. For companies, the DPP is an important tool for complying with legal requirements, including the EU Ecodesign Regulation.

Typical contents of the DPP include product identification data such as serial number and manufacturer, materials and components, production and supply chain data, as well as environmental data such as CO₂ footprint and energy consumption. The DPP is typically provided as a QR code or through other digital technologies, allowing authorized actors such as manufacturers, retailers, and consumers to access this valuable information. The implementation of the DPP establishes a significant foundation for the sustainable transformation of the economy and society by enabling transparency throughout the entire product lifecycle.
