Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF)

A corporate carbon footprint represents the emissions generated by all of the company's activities within the selected reporting period and operating limits. The resulting CO2 balance includes at least Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, preferably also Scope 3 emissions, as far as possible.

The Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) is a comprehensive measurement of all greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) caused by the activities of a company, its products, and the entire value chain. These emissions are represented as carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e) and serve as a climate balance at the organizational level. The CCF is crucial for the development of sustainability strategies, compliance with legal requirements, and reporting to stakeholders.

A CCF typically includes direct emissions (Scope 1) from sources controlled by the company, as well as indirect emissions (Scope 2) from the consumption of energy such as electricity or heat. Capturing indirect emissions (Scope 3), which result from the entire value chain, is particularly important as they often represent the largest portion of a company's total emissions. This includes emissions generated by the procurement of materials, transportation, product use, and their disposal.

The calculation of the CCF occurs in several steps: First, organizational boundaries must be established to determine which business areas are included. Subsequently, detailed data is collected on emission-relevant activities, such as electricity consumption or fuel usage. The activity data is then converted into CO₂e using scientifically based emission factors. The CCF is guided by recognized standards, such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064, which ensure that the calculations are consistent and transparent.

Determining the CCF enables companies to identify significant emission sources, set scientifically based reduction targets, and track progress toward their climate goals. This is not only crucial for meeting legal requirements but also for responding to investor and stakeholder demands for transparency and accountability in climate protection.
